Here's one of the residents of the Estuarium on Dauphin Island. I think this Blue Crab was so defensive because he saw how tasty his brothers and sisters were in the dishes being served around his tank.

  <title>Tarrica Petite Syrah</title>

The second entry in my new wine drinking / photographing pursuit is this Petite Syrah from Tarrica Wine Cellars. This is a nice, inexpensive red ($14.00 for this bottle). It drinks smooth and finishes soft with some very noticeable oak flavor. The Tarrica website says this wine is aged for 18 months in both American and French oak barrels. I guess that's where the finish comes from.

We discovered Tarrica Petite Syrah at a tasting recently. You can buy it at Anna's in Joe Patti's or at Artesana here in Pensacola.

Photo note: I really should give my wine glasses a super wash before shooting. It's hard though since I want to drink the wine and I end up moving the glass multiple times to get it just right. You may just have to put up with a few smudges.

  <title>The Mongrel</title>

I haven't had much to shoot lately, so I thought I might talk a little about wine, which I'm starting to appreciate. There's much to know, and I can safely say I don't know much. Perhaps I'll make myself into a sommelier someday though.

This bottle is from Hugh Hamilton Vineyards in south Australia. Anna and I got to meet Hugh at a wine tasting at Distinctive Kitchens a couple of months back. He's a pretty cool dude. In fact if we're ever on his continent, we're planning to make a trip to his place to meet the rest of the family and his dogs as well as sample the wines you can't get here in the U.S.

We're just starting to dip our toes into reds and Hugh had some offerings that tickled our taste buds quite nicely. The Mongrel is a Sangiovese blend. This particular bottle is from the 2008 vintage. It's smooth without any harsh bite in your mouth and finishes soft. The label says I should taste cherries, sage and rosemary and should enjoy it with tapas or other Mediterranean fare. I don't know about all that, but it drinks well while you're watching football. Today, that's good enough for me.
